Heading up
Early in the hike and looking at our destination, the Prairie Ridge up ahead. (Photo by Austin Explorer)
Ridge and Creekbed
As you can tell, we were captivated by the ridge, now in the distance. We could hear mourning doves singing in the trees running along the creek in the foreground. (Photo by Austin Explorer)
Ridge
The rocky outcrop turns out to be multiple outcrops from another angle along the trail. (Photo by Austin Explorer)
Cougar Ridge?
This rocky ridge marks the park and county boundary. It also seemed like a prime cougar hangout spot to us. (Photo by Austin Explorer)
Mount Tam, again
Another view of Mount Tam in the distance. (Photo by Austin Explorer)
American Canyon
Looking generally towards the trailhead, the city of American Canyon and the Napa River marshes. (Photo by Austin Explorer)
Wide open spaces
A few trees here and there, but most of the Newell trails are wide open to the sky. (Photo by Austin Explorer)
North Loop Canyon
The northern portion of the Loop Trail leads through a narrow canyon that we found to be the quietest spot in the park. We could only hear the wind along this stretch. (Photo by Austin Explorer)
Orienteering Marker
One of the beginner orienteering markers we enjoyed spotting along our hike. (Photo by Austin Explorer)
Ruins
Another barn closer to the trail. Though falling apart, it's metal roof seemed relatively new. (Photo by Austin Explorer)
Mount Tam
Looking back towards the trailhead one can easily spot Mount Tam in the distance. (Photo by Austin Explorer)
Barn
Not too far from the trailhead a nice barn appears to the left. (Photo by Austin Explorer)
