Natural Bridge Tunnel

This is a shot of the tunnel under the natural bridge located approximatly 1/2 mile from the West end of the trail. There is no sign there but there is a bench located on top. [Caprock Canyons - Eagle Point Trail]

Getting into shape for some serious hiking in a couple of weeks. Beautiful autumn day for the hike. It had rained the night before so the trails were pretty slick in places. I acutally got to see the Longhorns that are roaming in the park.

A favorite of mine

I really enjoy Dinosaur Valley. It is very active along the river and on the campground side of the river but once you get over on the backside of the park you pretty much have it to yourself. The occasional hiker or bike rider is about all you see

I went back to SASP again this weekend and tried to pick up some of the trails that I had missed the prior week. Again its a nice place to log some serious miles.

lots of miles
San Angelo State Park - 9/20/2014  [View Log Page]

I've been looking for someplace to log a lot of miles without doing a lot of backtracking. I found that SASP worked out pretty good. They advertise 50 miles of trail however I would say its closer to 30. They have quite a bit of side by side trail, one for horses and one for bikes. I wouldn't necessarily call it two trails since they are so close together and they use the same name. They have their trails broken down into so many segments. It does get a bit confusing with all of the segments, service roads and side by side trails. I think I was over half done hiking before I understood their trail marking system. Make sure and take a trail system map and utilize the larger maps at all of the waterholes to help keep yourself straight.

It was a beautiful day to hike. Weather was pleasant and I made very good time. There is not a lot of elevation change in the trails, what there is isn't real difficult. For the most part it wasn't very scenic. It was sad to see the dried up lake and all of the abandoned campground and picnic sites around the lake.  There was very few people even in the SP. Once I started hiking I saw 2 people in 8 hours. There was evidence of trail maintenance and there is potable water in faucets every 3 or 4 miles so you don't have to lug a ton of water with you.

I started too late in the day for such a long hike. It got dark on me about 1.5 hours away from my vehicle. I had a headlamp with me but I had no spare batteries and the headlight started dimming so I made the decision to jump onto the park road and hike the last 2.5 miles back to my vehicle.

Overall I enjoyed the hike. I plan on going back and doing some more of the odds and ends trails later. If your looking for a good place to log some miles San Angelo is a good place to do it.

Completing the loop

This hike I made is actually the running trail, the Little fox canyon trail and the Paseo del Rio trail . I strung all of these trails together to make a loop with the lighthouse trail to create one big loop. It was raining quite heavily the day I made this hike so I had the trails to myself. I never saw anybody until late in the day after the rain had quit. The solitude was very nice. The trail offers a lot of different prospectives of the canyon as you move around from point to point. I plan on making a trip back to spend some more time in the park.
