The trail is easier on the way in than on the way out! There's plenty of flat trail in shade and for the most part the incline/decline is gradual. There are a few stretches with steep rock stairs and a few fun rock piles to climb over. The ascent out of the canyon is intense for the weaker hiker since the descent in is misleadingly easy.
Nice way to get to the river. Short and relatively easy. A few stretches to climb but managable. I found it a bit underwhelming. The promise of a sand slide at the end was a disappointment. The climb to the top looked difficult and the people attempting to slide appeared to have to scoot their way down. We met a nice older couple who had worked at the park 50 years ago who said there used to be much more sand. We could see plenty of rocks poking through the "slide" where they said there wasn't any when they worked there.
Great view from a very short hike. Starts in marshy area off of the Rio Grande Village campground ending with a view of the range in Mexico.
